The Sons of Norway Sports Medal Program is a fun and engaging way to stay active while enjoying the Norwegian tradition of friluftsliv (outdoor life and recreation)! It's uniquely designed to reward healthy habits at every age, activity level and exercise preference. - www.sofn.com
We promote physical wellbeing, which results in a sense of camaraderie. We look for a variety of way to undertake sports. Bowling has been a popular fun way to both get together and ‘move a little’. Other activities may include walking and other activities in which members have shown an interest.
The Sports Weekend is an important annual Sons of Norway activity involving all Lodges in Alberta and Saskatchewan. A volunteer Lodge hosts the Sports Weekend each year. The event generally takes place over three days and the host lodge determines the dates of the events. Historically these weekends took place during February or March but more recently in the months of May or June.
Registration starts on Friday and on Saturday, the games take place during the day, followed by social activities, such as a buffet banquet and a dance. Sunday brings a close to the weekend, often with a breakfast/brunch and at time the awarding of trophies.
All members are welcome to participate. Activities and sports are chosen by the host lodge. They have included: Norwegian whist, bowling; walking and golf. Members, and their guests can participate in whatever activity they choose.
